The station was once a major railway junction with a confluence of lines radiating from the town, although today the station is very much a shadow of its former self. It originally had six platforms, although two of these are now filled-in bay platforms, and the tracks have been removed on a further two platforms on the northern side of the station, leaving just two operational platforms. Nearby can be found the Whitemoor marshalling yards, which have now been returned to use in 2004 having been disused since the early 1990s.
