. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 31,572 people in 6,119 households. The present mayor, elected in 2010, is Kristine "Tintin" Salve Estipona Hao, daughter of the preceding mayor Emily Estipona-Hao.

Educational institutions

The municipality hosts the 3,668-hectare campus of the lone state college in the province of Masbate which is the Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT), named after the former congressman of the province, Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa, Sr.
