History

Mal Kelapa Gading's Phase 1 opened on 1990. Phase 1 was a 32,000 m² project and had 2 anchors: A Diamond Department Store and Supermarket. This project proved to be so successful, that in 1995 Phase 2 was constructed. This phase added 40,000 m² to the mall. By the time Phase 2 was constructed, Mal Kelapa Gading had 250 stores.

More recently, on April 10, 2003 Mal Kelapa Gading opened Phase 3. This phase brought the total mall size to 130,000 m² and a grand total of 600 stores in the mall.

Mal Kelapa Gading is also organized by sections. There is a section for exclusive clothing (The Catwalk), teenage shopping area (Fashion Hub), and wedding shopping needs (Bridal World). In addition, Mal Kelapa Gading has 2 sections for food, with cafes being in the Gourmet Walk and a 6000 m² food-court in Food Temptation.

Between 2007 and 2008, Mal Kelapa Gading has made some changes. The food court on Mal Kelapa Gading's Phase 1 was change to Food Sensation. They also opened the new majors stores, Farmers 99 Market and Star Department Store. The fifth phase of this mall is anchored by Best Denki

The mall complex also includes La Piazza, a structure dedicated to restaurants and cafes. La Piazza houses Kelapa Gading's third cinema, XXI. Mall 5 (4 is skipped due to an unlucky superstition) opened in 2007, which increased the number of retail stores. Kelapa Gading mall is still under further developments with a dedicated apartment planned for construction. The apartments will feature air bridges dedicated to the movement of occupants between the apartment and mall, a concept similar to that of Taman Anggrek Mall.

Ownership

The shopping centre is owned and is operated by PT Summarecon Agung Tbk., a property company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange

Structure

Mal Kelapa Gading has a total gross area of 130,000 m² on three floors. There are over 600 tenants, more than 30 exclusive fashion boutiques, 6,000 m² of food court, three cinemas and several other entertainment facilities, including a bowling hall and a Timezone Arcade.
