Categorized as among the small towns in the province,it has a total land area of 34 square kilometers.The coasts of Lugait also prove worthy for anchorage and navigation. A private wharf in fact is perched at Salimbal Point and cargo ships with both domestic and international routes are a common sight.
History
Lugait was once one of the barrios of Initao, Misamis Oriental until 1948. When the town of Manticao became a separate municipality from Initao, Lugait became its biggest barrio with the biggest population and revenue contribution.March 19, 1961 marked the autonomy of Lugait from its mother municipality when then President Carlos P. Garcia signed and announced Executive Order No. 425 that created the Municipality of Lugait in the province of Misamis Oriental.
As early as its creation, Lugait opened its doors to industrialization. It availed itself of the opportunities then prevailing at the time and soon the world came to know Lugait by the flow of its cement and G.I. roofing products in the market. These commodities became the community’s by-word.
Economy
Most of the area is agricultural, although starting from the southwest at Salimbal Point in Poblacion, hundreds of hectares are converted into industrial land and another development of the same nature also exists at the other side of the Lugait river. More agricultural lands are now yielding to other purposes such as commercial, industrial and residential. The following are the existing general land uses of Lugait: Built-up-132.7216 hectares or 3.64% of the total land area, Agricultural- 2,679.3212 hectares or 73.49% of the total land area, industrial- 63.1381 hectares or 1.73 % of the total land area, mineral land-196 hectares or 5.38% of the total land area, forest land- 64 hectares or 1.76% of the total land area, infrastructure/utilities- 42.1116 hectares or 1.16 % of the total land area, and other land uses- 468.3794 hectares or 12.85% of the total land area.(Comprehensive Land Use Plan, 2000).Lugait is a 2nd class municipality. It has an annual realized income of Php 63,419,226.00 for fiscal year 2010.
The municipality is accessible by plane through Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City or by boat either through the ports of Iligan City or Cagayan de Oro City. It may then be reached by bus, jeepney, taxi or van for hire. It usually takes only 45 minutes from Iligan City and 1 and ½ hours ride from Cagayan de Oro City. The common means of transportation to and from or within Lugait are jeepneys, buses, motorelas, tricycles, motorcycles for hire and taxis.

Cement, Coconuts, fish and other fresh and processed marine products, bananas and garments are Lugait’s major products. It also prides itself of its famous delicacy- arguably the tastiest bibingka or rice cake this part of the country.
Lugait has a vast reservoir of skilled labor with proper training and upgrading in various fields in non-formal education duly accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).It also has a high literacy rate of 97%.
Major Establishments in Lugait are Holcim Philippines,Inc., Mindanao Steel Corporation, Horizon Port Services, Trine Construction, WOL Corn Mill, Sy Corn Mill, CY Hardware, Lugait Lumber and Industrial Supply, and Shell Gasoline Station.
New investments in Lugait are entitled to tax incentives as approved by the Sangguniang Bayan. It has an active Chamber of Commerce and its peaceful and investment-friendly environment makes it conducive and advantageous to business.
Communications and electrical needs
All barangays in the municipality have electricity. This is being served by the Misamis Oriental Electric Cooperative (MORESCO-1). Located also in Lugait is the diesel-powered Northern Mindanao Power Corporation that augments electric power consumption throughout the Northern Mindanao grid area. Telephone and internet services are being provided by PLDT-MARATEL. Mobile communications services are being catered by SMART Communications, GLOBE Telecom and Sun-Cellular networks. They all maintain their respective transmitter antennae in the municipality providing Lugaitnons full signal access to these networks anywhere in the community including the hinterland barangays..
Topography
Lugait’s weather patterns follow the wet and dry seasons prevalentthroughout the country. It however enjoys a typhoon free topography.
Religion
Lugait is predominantly of the Roman Catholic religion. Restaurants and food establishments catering native and seafood delicacies serve the culinary interests of visitors and residents alike..Recreation in the municipality is provided by karaoke bars and billiard halls. For those who crave for extreme sports, Lugait has a superb coastline for skimboarding and a challenging terrain for adventure biking. It also holds regular wallclimbing, biking and skateboarding competitions.
The Luga-Hait Freedom Park located in front of the Municipal Hall is being maintained for family outings and recreation. Children are also provided a Children’s Play Park for their pleasure. The site is also ideal for dawn exercises such as jogging, walking, aerobics and meditation.
Sports activities and events are also being held year-round. For this Lugait has been known as the Events Capital town of the province of Misamis Oriental.
Of interest are the annual events starting from the month of November. The schedule of events and activities would continue to December being celebrated as the Municipal Culture and the Arts Month then to January having been declared the Municipal Tourism Month. Major events and activities would continue to the month of March in time of the municipality’s week-long celebration for its Foundation Day.
Among the annual events and highlights are the Kalag-Kalag Tricks and Treats on November 1–2 that include dance contests, concerts and costume party at the Municipal Cemetery and the Kay Ka Andres Tribute Concert in the 30th. This month also would mark the start of free film showing at the Luga-Hait Freedom Park during Friday and Saturday evenings, major sports events intended to culminate in January the following year and the start of the Search for Miss Lugait Brain and Beauty Pageant.
The month of December is highlighted by the regular holding of the Teachers’ Cultural Night and the Pasko na Kids and Children’s Christmas Party where children are treated with games, ice cream, cotton candy, give-aways, mascots, magicians and entertainment. The Pasko sa Nayon is also an awaited annual event being highlighted by a community party, presentations, caroling contests and a fireworks display.
The month of January is also loaded with regular annual events such as free concerts from invited film and music industry celebrities, major sports tournaments, 4 in 1 Concert with 4 set-ups and bands simultaneously playing in a showdown of drawing audience to their musical preferences and prowess. Other awaited musical events are the Rock Wars annual band competition that already marked a decade last year and the Trance-Techno Party, an open-air dance party with live DJs and video streaming with spectacular lightings. And finally, the Search for Miss Lugait Brain and Beauty Pageant and ground demonstrations.
By March a week-long celebration is also being observed. This has been declared as the Luga-Hait Sons and Daughters Week. Among the highlights are street parties, drum and bugle competition, sports and literary events, cheerdance competition, dancesports competition, X-games competition and the awards night for Lugaitnons who had given honor to the community in education or other fields of endeavor or those who had contributed to its progress and development.
Lugait is a peaceful town and accomplished with all the national and regional awards it had been conferred. It is progressive and is keeping up with the changes and challenges of the times.
More importantly, Lugait is inhabited by fun-loving, hospitable, courteous, hardworking and proud Lugaitnons.
