History

This route dates back to 1949.

In the early 1990s, the route was withdrawn between Kingston and West Molesey, replaced by new route 411.

On 30 June 2007, the route was extended from Wimbledon to Tooting Broadway via route 57.

Trivia

The 131 is renowned amongst Tootingites as being poorly vocalised by the automated text-to-speech program.
The program, which informs users of the next bus stop approaching and the bus they are currently traveling on, seems to have difficulty saying "one" without appearing to be disabled.
