This is a list of old road routes in Melbourne

before Victoria
switched to the alpha-numeric system in the late 1990s. Some routes, in part or in their entirety, may have been made obsolete by the alpha-numeric designation: these are noted but not listed in full here. Some also may follow older alignments or routes later changed even after the new system was introduced (for example, routes 49 and 55), and are included here for the sake of completion. Roads are described in either a west-east or north-south alignment.
Most of Melbourne has kept to using the older shield system for the time being, however there are plans for an eventual change-over in the near future.
