Khát vọng Thăng Long

Vietnam had hoped to enter the 2008 race, but only film responded to an open call for entries (Black Forest, or Rừng đen) and the film was deemed to be ineligible since it had not been screened in a commercial cinema per AMPAS requirements.

Almost all of Vietnam's Oscar submissions were made by Vietnamese directors trained or based in Western countries. Trần Anh Hùng left Vietnam for France when he was 12 and Hồ Quang Minh left for Switzerland at age 13. Tony Bui and Lưu Huỳnh left for the United States at age 2 and 16 respectively and were educated there, although Lưu moved back to Vietnam in 1994. Minh Nguyen-Vo studied in France before moving to the United States to study in the 1990s.

Đặng Nhật Minh and Ngô Quang Hải have lived their entire lives in Vietnam, although they have worked on several international productions in France and the United States. Both worked on The Quiet American.

Vietnam's 1993, 1999, 2000 and 2005 submissions were all released on DVD in the United States with English subtitles.

Vietnam's 2007 submission, The White Silk Dress is the most expensive production in Vietnamese cinematic history.
