Lidingöbanan was legally a railway until August 2008, when it was reclassified by the Swedish railway inspectorate (Järnvägsstyrelsen). The electrical infrastructure (overhead wire) is of tram type.

The current cars (type A30/A30B and maneuver trams B30/B30B) are all over fifty years old, and remains from the period (1940s–50s) when the metro was only partially built and these parts were run with trams adopted for faster bi-directional traffic.
