Smirnov worked for the Ministry of Armaments of the USSR from 1939 to 1961:
  • Between 1939 and 1948, he rose from deputy head of production, to deputy chief of power, to being head of the Novocherkassk steam electric power plant. Smirnov became a member of the communist party in 1943.
  • From 1948 to 1949 he was at the Industry Academy of the Ministry of Armaments.
  • From 1949 to 1951 he was director of the Central Research Institute of Automatics and Hydraulics of the Ministry of Armaments.
  • From 1951 to 1952 he was head of rocket and space technology weapons of the Ministry of Armaments.
  • From 1952 to March 1961 he was director of the Dnepropetrovsk Machine-Building Factory (Factory-586)

     took place on 2 February 1961. The factory did not just make missiles. It also made tractors; in 1954 for example it produced 6,500. It played an important role in the life of Dnepropetrovsk; for example in 1957, it opened the Palace of Culture.

Leonid Smirnov was born in 1916 in the town of Kuznetsk, Saratov (now Penza ) of a working class family. Here, he graduated from the school number 1.

He graduated from the evening division of Novocherkassk Industrial Institute in 1939 year. In 1949 he graduated from the Academy of the Ministry of Industry of the USSR weapons.

During World War II was preparing weapons for the army.

Career:

1930-1933 - student of trade schools, electrician in Rostov-on-Don
1934-1948 - the duty electrician, inspector elektronadzoru, engineer, deputy head of production, the deputy chief power, combined heat and power head, the chief power engineer of the Novocherkassk plant of mining equipment.
1949-1951 - Director, Central Research Institute of Automatics and Hydraulics of the Ministry of arms of the USSR.

In 1980 , when the town of Kuznetsk observed its 200th anniversary, LV Smirnov arrived in the city of Kuznetsk, give the order "Badge of Honor." August 3, 1985 in the city held a solemn meeting, dedicated to the discovery of the bust twice Hero of Socialist Labor, deputy chairman of the Board Ministers of the USSR Leonid Vasilyevich Smirnov. Monument-bust was installed at the intersection of Lenin and Darwin, close to the 1 st school, where he studied.
