Club Overview

Leicester Penguins Swimming Club was formed in 1960. It’s membership fluctuates each year between 180 and 230, with training taking place at 5 pools around the Leicester area. The Club caters for swimmers at the start of their competitive career through to County and National Honours.

Throughout the Club history, it has remained one of the top competitive Clubs in the Leicester area with many of our swimmers taking County and Country honours.

Leicester Penguins is an Amateur Club. Like all amateur clubs its strength is proportional to the support given by all Swimmers, Parents, Teachers and Coaches alike. One of the most important aspects is the support role played by Parents. This cannot be over emphasised in terms of participation both on and off poolside

The Club competes in a number of premier competitions such as:- Speedo league (West Midlands Division), Leicester & District Swimming League, Nuneaton & District Diddy League and the Leicester & District Diddy League.

Throughout the year there will be a number of team galas, normally competing for some form of trophy. Team selections are based on the best chance of winning these events. At times this means selecting a swimmer who has a slightly slower time in order for another swimmer to compete in an event whereby the club will obtain more points overall. Swimmers compete in these events for ‘the team’ and should be recognised as valued team members irrespective of the number of races that they compete in. The ‘team comes first’ philosophy applies in these galas.

For individual recognition, there are the Club Championships to aim for, where they can gain medals and overall awards. In addition to these the club encourages swimmers to enter a number of designated ‘Open Meets’ (championships held by other clubs but are ‘open’ for swimmers from other clubs to compete in). There are also a number of friendly galas where swimmers may be selected to gain competition experience.

There are ample opportunities for each and every member of the Club to swim on a regular basis for the Club. The Club has a thriving teaching section, which starts with children from the age of 6 years. As a competitive Club the aim of this teaching group is to develop the youngster for eventual involvement in all the Club's competitive commitments.

One of the great strengths of Leicester Penguins Swimming Club is that the Club can offer training on 6 days of the week at 5 locations around Leicester which allows Swimmers and Parents the time to find the session that suits them the best. The times and venues of these training sessions are covered later in this handbook. The Club will, when necessary, train at the 50m pool in Loughborough.

Mission statement

Leicester Penguins Swimming Club will continually strive to uphold all the best ideals of sportsmanship. We will strive to be not only the best trained and the most successful competitive Swimming Club in Leicestershire but also one in which all our swimmers enjoy their swimming.
