Since 2009, Stan has served as co-editor and then editor for Europe of the Women's Studies International Forum, a journal published by Elsevier. She is currently the Vice-President of the Society for Romanian Studies. From 2006-2008 Lavinia Stan was the President of the Wildawsky Prize Committee of the American Political Science Association, while from 2003-2006 she was a member of the doctoral grants committee of the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS), American Political Science Association (APSA), Canadian Political Science Association (CPSA), Council for European Studies, International Political Science Association (IPSA), International Society for the Study of European Ideas (ISSEI) and Society for Romanian Studies (SRS).

She has served as an expert witness in a number of deportation and asylum cases in American courts. Publications

So far she authored, co-authored or edited 7 books (two in progress) and some 150 articles published in refereed journals such as Communist and Post-Communist Studies, East European Politics and Societies, East European Quarterly, Est-Ovest, Europe-Asia Studies, Government and Opposition, Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics, Problems of Post-Communism, Religion, State and Society. Some of them were translated in French, Romanian, Hebrew, Spanish, Croatian, Czech, Polish, Italian and even Dutch.

From 1997-2003 she published the quarterly report on the Republic of Moldova in the East European Constitutional Review, while since 2006 she has been invited to contribute the annual report regarding political developments in Romania in the European Journal of Political Research. In 2008, she participated in an international project comparing the efficacy of transitional justice processes in Latin America and Eastern Europe. In 2009, she wrote the country report on Romania for a major project developed by the European Commission through its General Directorate for Justice, Liberty and Security.
