Kyle Hannan

Kyle Hannan is a UK broadcast radio and social audio professional originally from South Africa
. An alumnus of Rhodes University
, he is generally associated with culturally or socially innovative community media initiatives. He is referenced on the websites of South African student radio service Rhodes Music Radio
and pioneering UK Muslim-Jewish online broadcast project Radio Salaam Shalom.
During the early 1990s he worked for the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC)'s Eastern Cape division as a prime-time radio presenter. As Station Music Programmer (later Acting Station Manager), he helped the move from analogue to digital on the SABC's first radio station to use PC-based digital studio automation systems. He was tasked with tailoring the new service to be the first to appeal to a multiracial urban adult audience and successfully raised local music content to levels which far exceeded the Broadcast Authority's requirement.
As an independent consultant in 1996 he helped establish UCRfm, the first community radio station in Nelson Mandela
's home region of Mthatha
. Later, after being part of the licence application team for national Afrikaans talk station PUNT in Cape Town, he worked to introduce a wider awareness of commercial radio as a career at college and University level in the Cape Province. His work formed the basis of broadcast syllabi still used today.
From the mid 2000s he moved to the UK where he was closely involved in several Bristol-based community radio projects and Festival radio stations, including projects at Glastonbury
and the Isle of Wight
. In 2005, Hannan joined the presenter roster of the Immedia satellite network based in Berkshire. He was a Director of Bristol's first community radio station BCfm before resigning in 2008 while helping to run Salaam Shalom in that city.
After moving on from Radio Salaam Shalom
in April 2010, Hannan was selected for an Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship at the Columbia Business School
in New York, an initiative to develop a network of entrepreneurs with a demonstrated interest in social change and cross cultural dialogue. He is currently working via the non-profit Ecomedia Collective in projects to use online media innovation and social audio to deliver positive change at community level.
