During the early 1990s he worked for the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC)'s Eastern Cape division as a prime-time radio presenter. As Station Music Programmer (later Acting Station Manager), he helped the move from analogue to digital on the SABC's first radio station to use PC-based digital studio automation systems. He was tasked with tailoring the new service to be the first to appeal to a multiracial urban adult audience and successfully raised local music content to levels which far exceeded the Broadcast Authority's requirement.

His work formed the basis of broadcast syllabi still used today.

. In 2005, Hannan joined the presenter roster of the Immedia satellite network based in Berkshire. He was a Director of Bristol's first community radio station BCfm before resigning in 2008 while helping to run Salaam Shalom in that city.
