in 2001, and has been re-elected on one occasion. He had previously served as a deputy representative during the terms 1993–1997 and 1997–2001. In October 2005 he was appointed Minister of Justice and the Police
in the second cabinet Stoltenberg
. His seat in parliament was taken by Thomas Breen
.
On the local level he was a member of Elverum
municipal council from 1991 to 1999.
Outside of politics, he studied political science
at the University of Oslo
, but graduated with the cand.jur. degree in 1990. He worked as a lawyer from 1992 to 2002.
