On the 14th of May 2009 Ingesson announced that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma

 for which he is currently being treated. The treatment is said to be going "in the right direction". Ingesson fully recovered since then and, on December 2010, made a football comeback by accepting an offer to guide the Elfsborg Under-21 youth team.
