Kistanje was first mentioned under its present name in 1401. In 1527, a Serbian Orthodox Church dedicated to St Nicholas was built in the townhttp://www.eparhija-dalmatinska.hr/Parohija-Kistanje-L.htm. Kistanje was a trade center of this part of Bukovica
