and became assistant professor of philosophy in Berlin in 1829. After his father's death (1829) he revised many of his father's works, especially the Allgemeines Fremdwörterbuch. His own works are: Handwörterbuch der deutschen Sprache (1833-49); Ausführliches Lehrbuch der deutschen Sprache (1838-49); and System der Sprachwissenschaft (edited by Steinthal, 1856).
