She is best known for her role as young Elizabeth Walton, which she played in both the 1971 movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, and the series The Waltons
. She reprised the role in each of the Waltons reunion movies during the 1980s and 1990s.
Cotler gave up acting to pursue a career in teaching, although she does appear fairly regularly at Waltons events. One of her first positions was at a school near Schuyler, Virginia
