Kahramanmaraş is a province

Historically prior to 1920, many Ottoman citizens of Armenians ethnicity lived in this province. However, in April 1915 the Ottoman military deported Armenians from the province and Zeytun, initially as a strategic measure. The deportees were forcibly moved to the Konya area and later to the Zor and Urfa regions. Armenian property in Marash was seized and given to Turkish Muslims.
The city received the title of Kahraman (Heroic) from the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) for the heroic struggle by the local civilian population against the occupying English
