KHTK emerged after long-time country giant KRAK switched formats in 1994, due to the declining AM music audience. 1140 AM became the sports station in 1994 with the first show featuring NFL Hall of Famer Jack Youngblood

On July 31, 2008, the CBS Corporation announced that KHTK and its five sister stations in Sacramento were being put up for sale as part of the planned divesture of radio stations outside the top-15 U.S. radio markets.

On November 9, 2011 KHTK rebranded as "Sports Radio 1140 The Fan".

 returned to KHTK in June 2010 as a local host, after a two-year retirement. Former night host Carmichael Dave, whose real name is Dave Weiglein, is Geronimo's producer. Geronimo's local program on KHTK airs from 5:30 to 10 am Monday to Friday.
