Lieutenant from 1954 to 1956. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Lieutenant Colonel, JAG Corps from 1977 to 1988. He was in private practice in Daytona Beach, Florida
from 1959 to 1966. He was a Cooperating attorney of NAACP Legal Defense Fund from 1960 to 1966. He was a Consultant, Daytona Beach Urban Renewal Department from 1963 to 1966. He was an Assistant U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Florida in 1966. He was a First assistant U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Florida from 1967 to 1971. He was a Special hearing office for conscientious objectors, U.S. Department of Justice from 1967 to 1968. Florida Governor Reubin Askew appointed him to the Supreme Court of Florida and he served as a Justice from 1975 to 1979.
Hatchett was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
. Hatchett was nominated by President Jimmy Carter
on May 17, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. He was confirmed by the United States Senate
on July 12, 1979, and received his commission on July 13, 1979. Hatchett served in that capacity until October 1, 1981, due to assignment to another court.
Hatchett was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit
. He was reassigned on October 1, 1981; Served as chief judge, 1996-1999. Hatchett served in that capacity until May 14, 1999, due to retirement.
