Joni persuaded her parents to buy her a violin for her 5th birthday. Aged 8, she was accepted into the Junior School at the Royal Northern College of Music

 (first study violin; second study piano). Joni began writing her own songs when she was 8 years old and has continued to write prolifically since then, developing a distinctive and mature songwriting style.

She released her debut recording "Voices" in October 2006, containing 12 of her original songs.

Joni scored two successive wins in the UK's national Make it Break it Songwriting Contest (2008 and 2009) with her songs 'America' and 'Change Girl'.

Early Years

 for the contest on 26 November, she competed against singers from other countries across Europe. Joni's mature songwriting style and performance contrasted with other acts and despite winning critical and media praise, resulted in 14th placing. Joni was diagnosed with severe laryngitis during the competition and was later to write about her experience from Hasselt in the song 'Over in a Minute' ('Voices' 2006).

2007 onwards

Joni was awarded 'Le Prix du Merite Artistique 2007' at the LDF awards ceremony in Lausanne in April 2007. She was also awarded the 'Besso Memorial Prize for Pianoforte 2007' by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

 2007. She also performed at the World Conference on Giftedness in August. Other 2007 performances include the Launch of the Themba Trust at the South African High Commission in London and a TV appearance on the Swiss Telethon 2007.

In 2008, Joni concentrated on live performances in the UK. She received a standing ovation following her performance at the Montrose Music Festival

. Further performances during the summer of 2008 included the Brunswick Festival (Brighton), Arundel Festival, Century Club (Soho) and Taurus (Manchester).

In August 2008, Joni was chosen by the Performing Rights Society to front a media campaign to highlight the importance of performance royalties in supporting young songwriters.

In October 2008, Joni's song 'America' was chosen by a panel of judges that included Chris Martin (Coldplay) as a winner in the 'Make it Break it Songwriting Contest'. Joni's performance at the awards ceremony caught the attention of LIPA student Harry Andrew Brown which led to Joni recording a 6-track EP ('Run for Cover') with Harry. The EP was released at the Montrose Music Festival in May 2009.

Performances in 2009 included the Bollington Festival, the Montrose Music Festival, The Wickerman Festival, Taurus, and a return to Montrose on 5 September to headline a fundraising event.

In August 2009, Joni's song 'Change Girl' was judged as a winner in the Make it Break it Songwriting Contest 2009. Joni was later featured in The Independent newspaper as an 'inspirational teenager'.

In 2010 Joni was awarded 'Best Female Artist' at the Exposure Music Awards and later featured as 'one to watch' by PRS for Music in their on-line magazine 'M'. Joni's music also came to the attention of music manager Terri Robson.

2011 sees Joni continuing to develop her high-energy, instrument-swapping live shows with performances in London (Ronnie Scott's, The Bedford, The Elgin) and a return to Athletissima in Lausanne, alongside headline performances at Mo-Fest and the Arundel Festival.
