In 1991 while still playing Watson began coaching at Waverley. In a nine year coaching career Watson coached at eight separate clubs.

Illness and death

Joe Watson was diagnosed with liver cancer

 and a day of charity matches was scheduled in August 2000 to raise funds for the former Australian international. Watson died on 30 September 2000.
