1990-1996: Southern California

 by defeated Long Beach State. With the win, McLaughlin joined Pepperdine's Rod Wilde as the only first year coach to win an NCAA men's volleyball title.

In 1991, the Trojans won 34 of 36 matches and lost just 21 games. The team also rattled off a school-record 30-match win streak, which included a perfect 16-0 record in conference play, before Long Beach State avenged its 1990 NCAA loss, with by defeating USC in the championship match.

1997-2000: Kansas State

McLaughlin served as the women's head coach at Kansas State, compiling an 82-43 record and advancing to the NCAA tournament four straight years.

In 1999, McLaughlin's Kansas State squad proved posted their fifth consecutive season with 19 or more victories, including five wins over ranked opponents. Kansas State also tallied a school-record 14 conference victories, earning McLaughlin the 1999 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year award.

In 2000, the Wildcats made the first Sweet 16 NCAA appearance in school history, before losing to top seeded Wisconsin. That year, McLaughlin's team produced the longest home winning streak (15), the most kills in season (2,024), and the second-most wins in the modern era (22). Kansas State placed two players (Kelle Branting and Liz Wegner) on the All-Big 12 and Central Region teams, and Wegner also became the first K-State player named to the Mideast Regional All- Tournament team.

2001-present: Washington

When McLaughlin took over for the Washington program in 2001, the team was last in the Pac-10 conference. In his first year at UW, he led the Huskies to an 11-16 record and a 4-14 mark in the Pac-10. The team's 11 wins in 2001 were the most for the program since 1997, while six players received Pac-10 All-Academic honors. In 2003, he was named the Pac-10 coach of the year.

In 2004, he made history by coaching the team to their first Pac 10 title in school history. McLaughlin also earned his first AVCA National Coach of the Year. UW pulled nearly 42,000 fans through its doors in 13 home dates for the nation's fifth-highest attendance average and set a then-school record on Oct. 23, 2004 when 5,712 fans came out to see the Huskies defeat Stanford. It marked the fourth-highest attendance figure in Pac-10 history.

Then, in 2005, just his fourth year at UW, he led the team to the schools first ever NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship
