Jim's brother older brother William P. Hughes, Jr., was stabbed to death during game five of the 1953 World Series (Yankees beat the Dodgers 11-7). He was watching the game on television at his home in Chicago and in a state of drunkenness got in a fight with his wife, Genevieve, who fatally stabbed him with a kitchen knife. Genevieve originally said that she was at the kitchen sink peeling potatoes with a knife when her husband came up behind her and kissed her. This startled her and she accidentally stabbed him. She later told police that they were having an argument.
Hughes was born and later died in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 78.
