In 2000, James was a contestant on the reality TV show The $20 Challenge, during which he was shown busking on the streets of London for extra money. His confidence and enthusiasm was arguably what won him second place in The $20 Challenge. Weeks after returning from London, he auditioned for channel [V]'s new reporter search. In 2003, Mathison became co-host of Australian Idol

On 31 March 2009, after six years with Australian Idol, it was announced Mathison had quit as co-host.

He was also on Nova FM's Launchpad with James & Patience, Monday to Wednesday nights from 9.30pm - 11:00pm.
