Iowa Colony was founded as a major speed trap along State Highway 288
in 1965, as it has five short areas (fingers) of its city limits that cross over 288. This allowed the Iowa Colony Police to consider speeders crossing through these fingers as ticketable. Iowa Colony is now patrolled by the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office.
The name of the town was given "Iowa Colony" because many of the first-generation residents were farmers who moved from Iowa to escape a cold climate, and wanted to farm all year round, which was possible in Southeast Texas.

There were 279 households out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were married couples
living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.5% were non-families. 19.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.29.
In the village the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.7 males.

opened to immediately accept 9th and 10th grades and phase in 11th and 12th grades in two years.
