Objective

Fostering talents and demonstrating trends and visions of tomorrow through fresh thinking – this is the declared objective of the International Design Award that is staged every two years by Hettich and REHAU
Rehau

as the companies holding it. The International Design Award also underscores the forward-looking approach to innovation management at both companies.

Competition assignment

The 2011 International Design Award is looking for interior designs as well as furniture concepts and systems that best meet the requirements of the next decade. The competition assignment relates to the three areas of living room and bedroom, kitchen as well as office workplaces. The adjudicators will be searching for innovative, multifunctional and creative designs that stand apart from classic applications. In terms of both design and technical intelligence, the solutions entered are to resolve the 'tug of war' in tomorrow's home and work environment.

Participants

The competition invites design students all over the world to create forward-looking, innovative and unusual solutions in furniture design and furniture-making.

Adjudicating panel

The adjudicating panel changes for each competition and is composed of international, well-known architects, designers and professors or university lecturers.

  • Fernando Jaeger has exhibition rooms in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo
  • Kaarle Holmberg teaches interior design at Lahti University's Institute of Design and the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki

  • Pierre Lo, interior designer, China

  • Johnny Grey, design studios in San Francisco and Hampshire/UK
  • Juliana Bertolini, lecturer in industrial design at Mackenzie University, São Paulo/Brazil
  • Dr. Fenghu Wang, deacon and professor at the Institute for Material Sciences and Engineering at Northeast Forest University, Harbin/China,
  • Maja Palczewska, industrial designer from Poznan, Poland
  • Dr. Liat Preiss, firm of architects and designers in Tel-Aviv as well as guest professor at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan, Israel
  • Michael Schmidt, design studio code.2.design, Stuttgart
  • Renata Sias, advisor to prominent companies, guest professor in industrial design in Milan as well as specialist in office architecture
  • Andreas Varotsos, Greek industrial designer who, among other works, designed the torch and altars for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens
