Structure

Founded in 1918, the IFE is a non profit making professional body membership of over 12,000 and a global reach that extends through 39 international branches. Licensed by the Engineering Council, the IFE provides professional standards within public and private fire sectors by offering assessment of knowledge, experience and development and engages with major stakeholders to offer international conferences, identify and promote good practice and enhance technical networks worldwide.

Localised branches run their own seminars and meetings. The branches are often allied to local fire authorities, as much interest in the IFE comes from the uniformed fire fighting world. There is a heavy concentration of UK based branches, but the IFE extends to Australia, Canada, Iceland

Grades of Membership

Affiliate - For anyone interested in the profession but not working as a fire engineer.

Student – part-time student of fire engineering (which may include vocational work place based training), or are in part time or full time employment in fire engineering.

Technician (TIFireE) – Passed IFE Level 3 Certificate, or have relevant academic qualifications plus the necessary experience.

Graduate (GIFireE) – Passed a mandatory paper plus three of the optional examination papers, or have relevant academic qualifications, or UK Station Officer Examinations plus three years of acceptable training and experience

Associate (AIFireE) – Passed two mandatory papers plus two of the optional examination papers or have relevant academic qualifications.

Member (MIFireE) – Passed two mandatory papers plus two of the optional examination papers or have relevant academic qualifications to degree level plus the necessary experience.

Fellow (FIFireE) – Available to existing Members who have demonstrated significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement and exceptional professionalism during his/her career.
