 (Ofsted). It is empowered to carry out inspections through an agreement with Ofsted and the Department for Education and Skills. Independent schools which are not members of the ISC are inspected by Ofsted. Ofsted is also responsible for all boarding school welfare inspection.

The service is run by a Board of Directors, some members of which are representatives of individual schools. The head of the service, known as the Chief Inspector, is Christine Ryan, who took over from Tony Hubbard in 2005.
