Geography and information

The village has around 3,300 ha of land and is built in the green forests with many springs of natural water.

History

Historically, the village had been a settlement called Mourkious (Μουρκιούς, Murkius) and was settled by the Turks as well as its name. On May 2, 1927, it changed its name to Iliokali and its settlement to a community, it adopted its name from a monastery (Iliokali Monastery) nearby.

, its buildings were rebuilt. Iliokali became connected by an asphalt road in the 1970s and more roads were paved in recent years. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium.

Its residents rely mostly on agriculture with household work. The village produces many cotton products.

The first public school in the village was constructed in 1913, and received a grant from the Ministry of Culture for its maintenance. The old school ran until 1986, when a new school was opened.

Working with the community is the Ilioklai Formation Council. With its large council of village elders founded several years ago and the KAPI (the Elder Centre) with a high standing in the local community. The organiser and president of the centre is Theoharis Tsionis.

In the Second Prefectural Division, is a football/soccer club PAO Iliokali

Iliokali became a part of the newly formed municipality of Pamvotis on December 4, 1997. The president of its Local Council is Konstantinos G. Papas.

The village lost some of its vitality as many inhabitants of the village emigrated to other parts of Greece and the rest of the world. Iliokalites continues to pay great attention to customs and local traditions of the area.
