His team also developed the first color infrared camera for Kitt Peak National Observatory

Gatley left NOAO for Rochester Institute of Technology
in 1997 and held positions such as the Director of Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (1997) , the Dean of the College of Science and the Director of the Center for Student Innovation and Undergraduate Research Support (2009) prior to his appointments as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at New Jersey Institute of Technology
