The process might at first seem illogical, as low oxygen levels should theoretically lead to increased blood flow to the lungs to receive increased gaseous exchange. However, it is explained by the fact that constriction leads to redistribution of bloodflow to better-ventilated areas of the lung, which increases the total area involved in gaseous exchange.

does not alter the hypoxia or the consequent vasoconstriction, but stimulates fluid reabsorption in the lungs to reverse the edema.

How the response is affected by sepsis

The hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstrictive response is impaired by anesthetics. The oxygen saturation in some patients who undergo anesthesia may drop, only to get higher after anesthesia discontinuation. The response is also impaired in patients with acute lung injury and respiratory distress syndrome, particularly in the face of sepsis. In one study of animals given endotoxin, cysteinyl leukotrienes were shown to play an important role as the reason for impairment of this response.,
