Hutt Valley Expressway
Encyclopedia
The Hutt Valley Expressway is a 20 km (12 mi) section of State Highway 2, running from the end of the Wellington Urban Motorway at the Ngauranga
, near Wellington, past Lower Hutt
, to the seagull intersection
at Fergusson Drive and River Road. The road has two names: Hutt Road from the Ngauranga Interchange to the Petone Overbridge, and Western Hutt Road from the Petone Overbridge to Fergusson Drive.
.
Only three intersections are not at-grade, the others being major ones controlled by traffic lights and minor ones controlled by Give Way and Stop signs. The Dowse, Petone, and Nguaranga interchanges are grade-separated.
The section between the Petone and Normandale Overbridges is currently being improved by the Dowse to Petone project, which will eliminate three sets of traffic lights and replace them with a grade separated roundabout and an overbridge.
Several minor intersections have been improved to prevent traffic turning right into or out of the minor roads, and there are provisions to replace the Melling and Haywards intersections with grade-separated interchanges in the future.
