Lake of the Woods, in particular, is home to many influential families. Citizens of this community include the commissioner of police of nearby Halifax, the Murphy family, the Bowie family; the Sobeys family, in addition to several high level private and public officials. Every year the community hosts Christmas and other festive decorating contests which are highlighted in national magazines. The "dream lifestyle" remains elusive for most Nova Scotians, as the cost of living here is crippling to most incomes. While some houses may look modest, they are actually expensive to buy, as the land they are on is quite costly.
