Created with the Constitution of 12 July 1979, its new seat is at Ambo since October 2000, on South Tarawa
. From 1979 to 2000, it was at Bairiki.
There is a Kiribati Electoral Commissioner (her name is Rine Ueara). The Kiribati voters last went to the polls on 22nd August 2007 (and 30 August for second round) to elect 44 MPs in 23 electoral districts.
