Ownership

1870 Holland & Barrett was formed by Alfred Slapps Barrett and Major William Holland, who bought a grocery store and sold groceries and clothing.

1900's Alfred Slapps Barrett and Major William Holland developed their business into two shops – a grocery store and a clothing store.

1920's Alfred Button & Sons bought the grocery business of Holland and Barrett and kept the name Holland & Barrett.

1970 Booker McConnell, formerly "Booker", a large cash and carry business, acquired Holland and Barrett. (Booker also acquired Heath & Heather stores and renamed them to Holland and Barrett.)

1992 Lloydspharmacy acquired Holland and Barrett.

2010 The Carlyle Group, the US private equity group, agreed to buy NBTY in July 2010 for $55 a share, estimated to be about $3.4bn to $3.8bn. The Carlyle Group's owns Alliance Boots, which includes Boots The Chemists in the UK and Alliance Pharmacies in the UK.

All of Holland and Barretts's own brand vitamin and mineral supplements are made by the company itself.

Products

Although they mainly sell vitamins, minerals and food supplements, they also sell a range of products, such as health bars, smoothies, herbal teas and toiletries and produce their own magazine called Healthy. They also sell fruits, nuts, seeds and snacks, sports nutrition supplements and 'natural' toiletries.

The company recently started its international expansion with franchising. The first three franchise stores opened in October 2008 in Durban, South Africa and the company currently has nine franchise stores operating in South Africa, all by the same franchisee. Singapore
