is one of a very even contest. the sides have met seventeen times with a result of nine wins to Ireland, seven to Argentina and one drawn game. At the end of the 2010 Autumn Internationals there was only a nineteen point difference in cumulative points scored. The largest winning margin of 20 points was recorded in the most recent meeting 28 November 2010 (Ireland 29 : 9 Argentina), only 3 years after the previous highest winning margin of 16 points was set on 2 June 2007 (Argentina 16 : 0 Ireland). However, Argentina have yet to beat Ireland on Irish soil, and Ireland have only won once in Argentina in 1952.

Ireland became only the second country to play Test matches against Argentina when they toured there in 1952. In that series the first Test was drawn 3-3 and Ireland won the second 6-0; the latter remains the only one in the history of the series to be won on the opposition's home soil. The teams did not meet again until 1970, when Argentina won both Tests.
