routed through Louisville's downtown. Ward later said that the route of Interstate 65 through downtown Louisville was a mistake.

had selected the intelligent Ward as his successor as governor, but Ward was not a particularly skilled or gifted candidate for public office. He beat Happy Chandler in the Prelims for governor and Happy later told his supporters to support Louie Nunn, after which he lost by only 3.2%. He became the first Democratic nominee for governor to lose since 1943.
