Hudson was born the son of the eminent dentist Edward and during adulthood practiced as surgeon / dentist at 71 Patrick Street, Cork

, though his main interest lay in Irish Music.

At the age of 14, Hudson transcribed the manuscripts of his teacher Edward O'Reill. Between 1841-43 he edited the literary magazine The Citizen, publishing 106 tunes from his own collection, which grew to 870 by his death. In 1901 his collection was privately sold, though is now publicly available at the National Library of Ireland
