History

The island was once inhabited by 400 people, many of the original houses were restored as holiday homes. the old main residential area is noted for the "Bridge of Paris". The McCarthy and O'Neill familys are known for living on this island for years. This island was and still today a major tourist spot and vacations spot because of there beautiful weather and scenery.

Also to survive on the Island the people either fished or farmed the land but, were unable to make adequate living as a result most of the young people immigrated to England, USA and Australia. Year round only 25 people live on the island during summer and winter most of the 40 houses that are now there are full of people. A lot of them relatives, whose ancestors who originally lived on the Island. The Island has a wild life preserve and beautiful beaches.

Now to get transportation to the island you have to go onto either one of the two ferries which come to the port 5 times a day.

A lot of the people come by ferries go to the beaches to have picnics and to swim.

One restaurant on the island famous for its fresh "catch of the day". Shrimp, lobster, salmon, crab and a variety of local fish. The restaurant is called, "The Island Cottage" which was owned by the O'Neill Family.

As you read one day on Heir Island is a big adventure. You can swim in the ocean,nature walk, play with the local dogs (BEWARE not all of the dogs are friendly, but most are.),go fishing, take boat rides, picking seashells, picking blackberries, and much more!

Geography

Over 200 species of wildflower grow on Heir Island. The island has many creeks and caves most notably The Dún. It has seven Beaches, and a sea arch. The island has a view of Carbery's Hundred Isles and of Mount Gabriel

. It has 360 acres (1.5 km²) of fertile land and is very easy to travel around.
Every year there is a special mass for all the children that died on the island during famine or from other miscellaneous sickness. It's beautiful and touching to watch all the tourists, children, pets, adults and elders gathering around and celebrating life in heaven. Also before Ireland had control of the island English throughout the centuries had originally controlled it until the English gave Ireland control of this island.

Tourism

The permanent population of Heir Island is only 25-30, but during summer months when the holiday homes are occupied the population increases to around 100. It has B&B's and a "restaurant". It is home to a handful of artists, who are drawn in by the island serenity. The island is also a popular location for bird watchers.
