In the village the population was spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 31.8% who were 65 years of age or older. Initially when the song was a hit, the town received unwanted publicity as many tourists and daytrippers drove through the town, took pictures, and even rolled their windows down to ask locals questions.
But far from being offended by the song, the locals invited Marx to be Grand Marshal
at Sherman County's Fourth of July parade in 1993, an invite that the singer accepted.
