. Two or three lanes of traffic enter or exit at each of these four roads. The complexity is greatly increased by tram lines running down Elizabeth St, Royal Parade, and Flemington Rd, which run through the middle of the roundabout, making it especially hazardous to cyclists entering or leaving the CBD.

It is these factors which prompted the City of Melbourne to announce an upgrade to improve safety for cyclists in May 2011.
