, Cao Cao's defending general at Hefei. Sun Quan's forces were unable to conquer Hefei even though they were superior in numbers, and decided to retreat after surrounding the castle for several days. Zhang Liao used the opportunity to launch a counterattack, taking Sun Quan's retreating army by surprise at Xiaoyao Ford. Sun Quan's men remained behind to fight Zhang Liao's soldiers while Sun himself attempted to flee by crossing the river on horseback, but he saw that the bridge had been destroyed.

Gu Li shouted at Sun Quan, telling him to sit tight, grab the reins firmly, and maintain control of the horse. Gu Li then went behind the horse and gave it a few whips to drive it forward. The horse then leapt across the broken bridge successfully and Sun Quan escaped from danger. Sun Quan later granted Gu Li the title of a marquis for saving his life.

In 226, Sun Quan had a large vessel built and named it "Chang'an". He intended to sail to Fishing Platform Boundary (釣台圻) but encountered a storm along the way. Sun Quan then planned to travel to Luozhou, but Gu Li strongly objected, pointing his sword at the oarsmen, ordering them to sail to Fankou instead. When Sun Quan later asked Gu Li why he was so afraid earlier, Gu replied that he was worried that Sun Quan might meet with an accident in the storm, which will lead to instability in the state. After this incident, Sun Quan respected Gu Li even more and no longer referred to him by personal name, but instead by surname.
