The group was founded in 1993: previously, the group was known under the name of the Socialist Group, born in 1958. In 2004 the group was renamed again, this time to the Socialist Group in the European Parliament.
The socialist group was disbanded in 2009, when it gave way to the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats
