Glanmire literally meaning ‘The valley of the small fish; The valley of the ploughed land:' The Still Vale: The Valley of the Young Fish) is a town in County Cork
, Ireland
with a population of 15,498.
"Glanmire" is used by residents of the area to mean the Greater Glanmire area, encompassing Riverstown (Baile Roisín), Brooklodge (Cill Ruadháin) and Sallybrook (Áth na Sailí) areas. These are all four semi-distinct adjacent villages with many facilities shared between them.
There also is an area outside Glanmire called Upper Glanmire, which includes White's Cross, Sarsfields Court, Ballyphilip, Ballinaparson, Coolgreen, Templemichael and Buck Leary's Cross.
Glanmire is situated 6 kilometres outside Cork
, 124 kilometres south (193°) of the approximate centre of Ireland and 214 kilometres south west (224°) of the Irish capital, Dublin.

In the 1800s Glanmire was much smaller, and mainly just consisted of the village area. It was a highly industralised area with woolen factories and mills scattered around the nearby river Glashaboy. A smallpox
fever once killed many people in the village. Riverstown House, actually located nearer Brooklodge, was resided in at this time. It was in the 20th century that Glanmire started to expand. In the later half of the century, more houses and facilities were built.
There are six primary schools serving the Glanmire area. These include Scoil na nÓg (An Irish Language, boarding and day boarding Primary School, founded in 1958), Scoil Naomh Micheál (Saint Michael's - Upper Glanmire), Scoi Naomh Iosaf (Saint Joseph's - Riverstown), Scoil Chill Ruadháin (Brooklodge Primary School), New Inn and Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil which opened in 2006. Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil will begin operating in the Ibis Hotel from September 2011.
Secondary Schools
There are two secondary schools in the Glanmire area:
Glanmire Community College (GCC), which was established in 1997. It is located on a twelve acre site. The college currently accommodates a pupil enrolment of over seven hundred and fifty.
Coláiste an Phiarsaigh which opened in 1973, is located in Glanmire Village. It accommodates around 550 students - both day students and weekly boarders. Coláiste an Phiarsaigh is part of the Gaelachas Teoranta Organisation.
Gaelachas Teo. hosts three Coláiste Samhraidh every year during June and July and August. These Coláistí Samhraidh accommodate students (boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14) from all around the country.

There are two Catholic churches in the Glanmire; Saint Michael's church (in Upper Glanmire) and Springhill (in Riverstown).
St. Michael's Church in Upper Glanmire was dedicated and reopened for worship in 1808 following major restructuring – the same year
as the Cathedral in Cork was dedicated. The bi-centenary of this church was celebrated in 2008 and a special Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on Saturday, 11 October 2008, with Bishop John Buckley as Principal Celebrant.
St. Joseph’s Church in Springhill is the Glanmire Parish Church and was dedicated in 1837. The church is located not far from the banks of the Glashaboy river. St. Joseph’s Church is in close proximity to the Crestfield Shopping Centre and overlooks the far end of Glanmire Football Club’s pitches. The parochial house is situated on the grounds of the church as is a "community room". It is the larger of the two churches.
Both St. Joseph’s church and St. Michael’s Church in Upper Glanmire are built on or near the sites of pre-penal times churches.
They have various parish groups including the Alter Society, Baptism Teams, Grotto Committee, IT team, Misisters of the Word, Eucharistic Ministers, the Finance Committee and the Parish Assembly.

Riverstown House:
Situated in Glanmire just 6 km from Cork City, Riverstown House is a privately owned historic house known for its ornate decor and extensive artwork. The house has an extensive and colorful history, as one might expect, having been originally established in 1602. It was Jemmett Browne, lbishop of Cork and Ross. who in the 1730s enlarged and remodeled the original 1602 Riverstown House, contracting with the great Italian stuccodores Paolo and Filippo Lafrancini, who came to Ireland in 1734. Riverstown House became their first and most important early work. The Lafrancini brothers adorned the ceiling of the diningroom with allegorical figures, and also its walls with classical figures and exuberant rococo flowers and foliage. The house remained in the Browne family until the present century but by the 1950s the house was empty and decaying. It was bought in 1958 by Mr. and Mrs. John Dooley. Riverstown House is open May - Mid Sep, Wednesday to Saturday from 14.00-18.00 and other times by arrangement.

Kids Play Zone
Monkey Maze is a 4 level 500 square metre adventure play area, catering for children up to 12 years old. It contains slides, play areas and 'mini monkey area' for younger kids. It is located in Glanmire Village.
Park
O'Callaghan's Park is situated at Riverstown Cross and has facilities for children including slides, swings and see-saws, as well as a short walking path to the river.
Shopping
Most of Glanmire's shops and services are located in the Hazelwood and Crestfield Centres in Sallybrook/Riverstown. Here you can find the local supermarket - SuperValu, a video store, a dental surgery, a hairdressers, a doctor's surgery, two pharmacies, a bank, a laundrette, a post office, a bookies, cafés, a credit union, a beauty salon, a pet store, a fruit and vegetable store, a library, a D.I.Y. store, butcher, a trinket store, various restaurants, take-aways and a bar.
In Glanmire Village you will find additional services including an IT services store,a taxi-cab service, a dance-studio, a motor-supplies store, hairdressers, a café, a bar, a bank, a florist, a petrol station/deli/shop/car wash, and a kids playzone ("Monkey Maze") which is said to be the largest one in Europe. Also this is the location of Glanmire Garda Station.
There are also other bars and restaurants in the area such as The Boothouse Bar, The Brook, The Barn and The Castle.
You can also find a garden centre, a gym (Key2NY), a car dealership (Grandons), a nursing home (Ballynoe, Whites Cross), a veterinary surgery (at Riverstown Cross) and a cat hospital in the area.
Health
St Stephen's Psychiatric Hospital is located in Sarsfields Court (Cúirt an tSarséiligh), Glanmire.
It originally opened in the 1960s as a hospital for TB when the most common treatments of tuberculosis were rest, fresh air, good food, and medical supervision. With developments in treatment for TB the need for beds in the hospital declined and so it became a psychiatric hospital.
There are also several doctor surgeries in the area including Glanmire Medical Centre, Crestfield Centre; Barnavara Hill Surgery and the surgery at Spireview, Church Hill.
Transport
Public transport services in the Glanmire area is primarily made up of the Bus Éireann bus service. Bus no. 246 runs from Cork City's Bus Station to Sarsfields Court (@ Buck Leary's Cross and the Hospital)and stops in Glanmire Village, Riverstown Cross and Sallybrook.
Many of Ireland's Pitch and Putt courses are situated in the grounds of a hospital like St. Stephen’s, which lies just ten kilometres from Ireland’s second city (and one of Pitch and Putt’s strongholds) – Cork.
Camogie
Sarsfields Camogie Club first played camogie in the Riverstown/Glanmire area back in the 1940s. Today the club trains several teams including Junior A, Under 8, Under10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18. The colours of the club are royal blue, white and black.
Hurling
Sarsfields Hurling Club is one of the oldest hurling Clubs in Cork, est. 1896 in the pike field Sallybrook, by a group of people led by Billy O' Neill from Sarsfields Court. Sarsfields Hurling Club now has the best of facilities including a club house, two playing pitches, a hurling wall, an all-weather pitch, four new dressing rooms and a new club gym. The club has a number of inter-county players in the past and present like Paddy Barry, Alan Lotty, Micka Brennan, Teddy McCarthy, John Considine, Garvan McCarthy,son of Paddy and Deirdre McCarthy,Church Hill, Glanmire, Co. Cork, Bertie Óg and Tadgh Murphy. At Present Sarsfields have representatives at various intercouty levels - Kieran Murphy, Conor O'Sullivan, Ray Ryan, Tadhg Óg Murphy and Eoin O'Sullivan.
Basketball
The Glanmire Ladies Basketball Club is based in the Little Island Sports Complex in Wallingstown, Little Island. They have 10 teams including Glanmire Division 1 (national), Galnmire Premier, Glanmire Division 2, Under 20, Under 18, Under 16 & Under 15, Under 14 & Under 13, Under 12, and Under 10.
Rugby
Rugby training takes place in Old Christians RFC in Ballincrossig, Rathcooney, Glanmire. The club has an underage section catering for teams from under 8 to under 12 in the mini rugby leagues, under 13 in friendly mode and under 14 to under 20 in the South Munster Underage leagues.
Football
Riverstown FC is a County Cork soccer club catering for players in the Riverstown and Glanmire areas. The club was formed in 1994. Riverstown has teams for boys and girls in the 6-10 year olds academy, boys teams from under 11s to under 16s, and a senior women's team. Riverstown has an arrangement with Glounthaune United whereby when girls leave the academy they play for Glounthaune until the reach senior women's level. They then return to play for Riverstown FC. The club's colours are yellow and black.

Every Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm, the Football Clubhouse in the Pike Field, Sallybrook, hosts The Glanmire House of Rock. This is where local bands such as Hot Coals, Evincere and Pa & Ja perform.External links
