Gemeenschapsonderwijs is the state provided school system in Belgium
. The schools are widely spread around the country and are most commonly named atheneum + name of village or city. Example: Royal Atheneum of Brasschaat
. All of the schools are also allowed to be named Royal (koninklijk).
Most Atheneums where built in the 1960s during the “Schoolstrijd” (schoolstruggle) in Belgium. There is a free choice of religion at the schools and they generally receive more money than Catholic school
