The main plot concerns on a meteorite

 that crashes in Los Angeles. It carried alien spores that transform humans into flesh-eating zombie

s. The spores spread like a virus across the city, transforming the populace into mindless cannibals.

The other story is about two rival gangs - The Lords of Crenshaw and El Diablo - who fight one another for dominance of Los Angeles even as it falls into a zombie apocalypse, although it eventually becomes clear that means very little in a world without humans.
