A free throw line dunk
occurs when a player dunks jumps from the free throw line and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands over the rim. On an NBA court, the free throw line is 15 feet from the basket.
The free throw line dunk was popularized when Michael Jordan used it to win the 1988 Slam Dunk Contest and give himself the nickname, "Air Jordan". Julius Erving first used it in the 1976 ABA Slam Dunk Contest to win the contest.
