In 1991, he was the French superbike Champion in the 250 cc category.
His friend with the same first name, Frédéric Provost was helping him during his motorcycle lessons at the beginning.
He began his career in the 1989 Grand Prix on the team of Aprilia
in the 250 cc category at the 1989 French motorcycle Grand Prix, with two participations during the season. He later participated with Aprilia again in 1991 in the 250 cc category. Between 1992 and 1994 he took part in championships sometimes with Honda, and sometimes with Aprilia.
1995 saw Protat changing to the 500 cc category with Yamaha

In 2006, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle along with the French Olivier Four and Spanish Daniel Ribalta-Bosch to handle Honda CBR.
