Hyde's career started during the Franco-Prussian War

 of 1870–71 as a war artist. Later he moved to Capri, where he discovered Ferrara and also introduced her to Sargent when he came to Capri in 1878. Sargent painted her at least twelve times during his year's stay in Anacapri
